Landrover Discovery Review: King of the Road

The Landrover Discovery is a mid-sized SUV manufactured by the UK car maker Land Rover, a division of Tata Motors. Since its introduction, there have been 4 generations made, the latest being the Landrover Discovery 4 (or LR 4).

The first Landrover Discovery came about in 1989, and was introduced first in the United Kingdom. The model was based on the drive train and chassis of the Range Rover, but sold at a lower price to aim the larger market segment. The Discovery was intended to compete against the Japanese car brands. But did it fair off well against the Japanese?

The latest Landrover Discovery is a two generation vehicle. Between model years 2000-2002, it was known as Discovery Series II. This great seven seater SUV is sold for only £27,000.

Unlike the today’s common and family friendly crossovers, Landrover Discovery is an old school SUV meant to pit against treacherous mountain paths. However, it’s more than a tough SUV: the Discovery was a perfect balance between tough trail capacity and on road comfort. The SUV’s off road capabilities and at a high level of luxury and comfort is its best boons, thanks to its Terrain Response System technologies.

It runs on a 4.4 litre V8 engine, running at 188 bhp on diesel. The car doesn’t run fast, because it’s not created to be a sports car, but it’s very road friendly. The 6 speed auto is preferable but the TDV6 2.7 litre V6 turbo diesel runs quite well, too.

The interior cabin of the Landrover Discovery is just lovely. Still looks like the Range Rover, where everything feels chunky but well organized. It’s not as luxurious as the Range Rover, but you get a sense that the Discovery should not be taken lightly. It is a proud and imposing SUV.

Discovery is unusual for instead of a monocoque chassis (on road) or a ladder frame chassis (off road rides), the SUV has both. This makes the car’s machinery extremely heavy, but still manages to provide the best drives in its category. Steering of the car is good, considering that it’s an SUV.

The comfort level of the Landrover Discovery is just superb—its just as comfortable as the Range Rover! It’s quiet, cool, and the cruising is smooth, allowing a smooth and enjoyable ride for the passengers. There is plenty of leg and head room available.

When it comes to ergonomics, versatility and safety, this 5 door seven seater admittedly lags behind its competitors. The cargo space is surprisingly limited for a big SUV like Discovery. Stability control is not available, and side airbags are absent.
You get what to pay for when buying the Discovery SUV. Residual is good and the insurance costs are low.
